چکیده
Cocoyam [Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott] also known as taro is regarded an important staple crop in the Pacific Islands, Asia and Africa. But, Africa has been unpopular international market though it accounted for highest share of global production level last two decades. Therefore, this study explores outlook decades (2000–2019) with a special focus on African countries noting their challenges limitations. Also, industrial, nutritional health benefits were discussed to showcase other viable potentials beyond its usefulness food security continent.

Genetic Diversification and Dispersal of Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott)
Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is widely distributed in tropical and sub-tropical areas. However, its origin, diversification and dispersal remain unclear. While taro genetic diversity has been documented at the country and regional levels in Asia and the Pacific, few reports are available from Americas and Africa where it has been introduced through human migrations. We used eleven mic...
متن کاملNutritional composition of “gari” analog produced from cassava (Manihot esculenta) and cocoyam (Colocasia esculenta) tuber
Physicochemical properties ofgari analog produced from coprocessing of Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) and Cocoyam (Colocasia esculenta) were investigated. Cassava tuber and cocoyam were coprocessed at different percentages before frying separately. Proximate composition, mineral content, antinutritional factors, and sensory evaluation of various samples were determined. The results showed t...

The goal of this study was to determine the rat lens aldose reductase-inhibitory effects of 95% ethanol extracts from the leaves of C. esculenta and, its organic solvent soluble fractions, including the dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol (BuOH) and water (H2O) layers, using dl-glyceraldehyde as a substrate. Ten compounds, namely tryptophan (1), orientin (2), isoorientin ...

متن کاملAmeliorative Potentials of Cocoyam (Colocasia esculenta L.) and Unripe Plantain (Musa paradisiaca L.) on the Relative Tissue Weights of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats
AIM To investigate the ameliorating potentials of cocoyam (Colocasia esculenta L.) and unripe plantain (Musa paradisiaca L.) incorporated feeds on the renal and liver growths of diabetic rats, induced with 55 and 65 mg/kg body weight of Streptozotocin. METHOD The blood glucose level of the rats was measured with a glucometer, the protein and glucose and specific gravity (SPGR) in the urine sa...
